Cowslip (Primula officinalis)

Cowslip (Primula officinalis), also known as common primrose, medicinal primrose, or yellow spring flower, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Primulaceae family. This plant is well-known for its medicinal properties and its characteristic appearance with yellow flowers, and it is found in several mountainous areas of Albania, including the Korab massif. Morphological characteristics:

Habitat and distribution in the Korab massif: It grows in alpine meadows, wet grasslands, forest edges, and herb-rich areas. It prefers humus-rich, fresh, and well-drained soil. In the Korab massif, it is found at altitudes of 1,200–2,200 meters above sea level, in areas with moderate sun exposure. It is often part of the spring vegetation in these areas, contributing to the park's floral richness.

Medicinal properties and traditional use: The roots and flowers contain saponins and other compounds used for: soothing cough and respiratory tract diseases; diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects; nerve calming in traditional teas. Caution: For medicinal use, professional information is required, as some parts of the plant may cause allergic reactions.

Conservation and ecological significance: Although not a globally endangered species, in some areas it is under pressure from excessive harvesting for medicinal use and habitat destruction. In Korab-Koritnik Natural Park, this plant is part of the flora that has value for the local ecosystem and biodiversity.

Cowslip (Primula officinalis) is part of a study on the Inventory of rare and endemic plants for the Korab-Koritnik Natural Park, being conducted by ALCDF with expert groups from the Iliria association, within the framework of the project "Protection and sustainable use of protected areas in Sharr Mountain, Mavrova, and Korab-Koritnik". This project is funded by the PONT program – Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust, implemented by ALCDF and partners CSCD and LAG Dibra Turistike.
