Sharr Violet (Viola schariensis)

Sharr Violet (Viola schariensis) is an endemic species of Mount Sharr and Korab, belonging to the genus Viola and the family Violaceae. It is a rare and localized violet found only in the alpine regions of the Sharr Mountains in Kosovo, North Macedonia, and partially in Korab - Albania.

Morphological Characteristics:

Height: Usually 5–15 cm
Leaves: Rounded or slightly oval in shape; edges are wavy or lightly serrated; clustered at the base of the stem
Flowers: Usually dark violet or blue-violet in color; with distinct petals, the lower petal is larger and often has fine dark lines that help attract pollinating insects; blooms in early summer

Habitat and Distribution:

Grows in subalpine and alpine zones of Mount Sharr and Korab, primarily at altitudes above 1,800 meters. It prefers dry, rocky soil with minimal humus, often in areas with good sun exposure. It grows in alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and mountain gorges.

Ecological Importance and Conservation:

As an endemic species, Viola schariensis has special significance for local and regional biodiversity. It is sensitive to climate change, habitat destruction, and human activity (such as construction, intensive grazing, or uncontrolled tourism). It should be included in protection measures as part of the protected flora in the Korab-Koritnik Natural Park and surrounding areas. Sharr Violet (Viola schariensis) is part of a study on the inventory of rare and endemic plants for the Korab-Koritnik Natural Park, being conducted by ALCDF with expert groups from the Iliria association, within the framework of the project "Protection and Sustainable Use of Protected Areas in Mount Sharr, Mavrova, and Korab-Koritnik." This project is funded by the PONT program – Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust, implemented by ALCDF and partners CSCD and LAG Dibra Tourism.
