Ecosystem Protection of the Ohrid–Prespa Transboundary Region
Supported more sustainable management of the Ohrid–Prespa transboundary biosphere landscape by improving knowledge about ecosystems and their contribution to local economic activities.
Project Overview
The project supported more sustainable management of the Ohrid–Prespa transboundary biosphere landscape by improving knowledge about ecosystems and their contribution to local economic activities.
It addressed the need to balance environmental conservation with traditional livelihoods such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, hunting and tourism.
What We Did
The project developed a GIS-based environmental monitoring and planning system and mapped important ecosystem services across the target area.
It also developed scenarios for sustainable use and conservation of natural resources through participatory processes involving local communities and stakeholders.
Key Results
An integrated environmental monitoring system was established, generating stronger information for natural-resource planning and decision-making.
The initiative strengthened cooperation among stakeholders and increased support for the preservation, restoration and sustainable management of flora, fauna and ecosystem services in the transboundary region.
