Montenegro and Albania Towards Zero Waste

Project Overview

Montenegro and Albania Towards Zero Waste promoted more sustainable management of natural resources by helping two cross-border communities reduce residual waste through prevention, separation, reuse and recycling.

The project combined municipal planning, infrastructure, public awareness and community participation to demonstrate practical pathways towards Zero Waste communities.

What We Did

Zero Waste Advisory Boards were established, and local waste streams and household practices were assessed.

The project introduced waste-separation tools, public education campaigns, community clean-up activities and practical reuse and recycling pilots.

Long-term five- and ten-year Zero Waste plans were prepared to support continued municipal action after the project.

Key Results

Approximately 80% of the population in the two municipalities participated in awareness activities, while around half of local businesses and organizations became involved in joint waste-management actions.

At least ten littering hotspots were identified, six were cleaned, and residual waste was reduced by approximately 5% during implementation.

The project helped establish a stronger basis for long-term circular-economy and waste-reduction practices in both communities.
