ProTour promoted cultural and ecological tourism as a means of supporting both local economic development and environmental protection in the Vjosa and Zagoria valleys.
The project sought to increase the visibility and responsible use of the area's outstanding natural and cultural resources while complementing existing tourism initiatives in the Gjirokastër region.
What We Did
New hiking routes and tourism assets were identified and promoted, helping make the area's natural resources more accessible to visitors.
Environmental-awareness activities encouraged responsible use and preservation of local landscapes.
Local guides received practical capacity development in mountain guiding, orientation, first aid and basic English for tourism.
Key Contribution
ProTour helped strengthen the conditions for locally driven eco-tourism while building awareness that environmental conservation and tourism-based economic development can reinforce one another.
