Assessment of grassland state and productivity in Korab – Koritnik Protected rea

Description

The Sharr-Korab Massif represents a unique landscape where nature, people and traditions have coexisted for generations, while the meadows of Korab remain essential for local livelihoods and ecological balance. With this vision, the project “Protection and Sustainable Use of Protected Areas in the Sharr, Mavrovo and Korab-Koritnik Mountains” was created, which aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation for the conservation of natural resources.

The project, funded by PONT and implemented by ALCDF with partners in Albania and North Macedonia, covers over 180,000 hectares of protected areas. It has created transboundary platforms, co-management structures and monitoring networks that connect park administrations, communities and experts.

A key component is the study on the assessment of the condition and productivity of meadows in the Korab–Koritnik Nature Park, which analyzes pressures, restoration potential and sustainable management of this area.

The study was carried out by Prof. Dr. Elvin Toromani and his team, in collaboration with vegetation and GIS experts, combined scientific work with community involvement. This process reflects the role of shepherds, local experience and the need for the protection of natural resources.

The final report serves as a scientific basis and as a call to continue investments that guarantee the preservation of landscapes and the well-being of communities.
